Monroe County added 177 new homes in 2019, the most since 2007 and a 31 percent increase from 2018.
The Monroe County Building Department issued 177 permits for new homes during the year that ended Dec. 31. That’s 42 more than the 135 new home permits issued in 2018. The total value of those new homes, $48 million, was up from $34 million in 2018.
The 2019 total of 177 new homes marks the third-best single year for new homes since the city and county combined building permit offices in 2005. The first two recorded years, 2006 and 2007 remain the top two years for new homes with 301 and 254, respectively. After the 2008 housing crisis, the number of new homes fell all the way to as few as 47 in 2011 and 2012 before slowly rising back up to where it is now.
All told, the county issued 504 permits for construction in 2019, which includes everything from a new home to a new pool to a mobile home. Those permits covered $64 million worth of new construction. In 2018 the county issued 453 permits for $54 million of work.
