A High Falls man shot and killed his neighbor’s pit bull after it acted aggressively toward a woman and killed two cats. According to a sheriff’s report, Dennis Keith Melton of 88 Drewery Company Drive told deputy Peyton Henderson around 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 6 that he asked his neighbor to come and shoot the dog because it was trying to attack his wife. Melton said he wanted to make sure he did nothing wrong and Henderson assured him he had not.

After speaking to Melton, Henderson was flagged down by Jerome and Teresa Hancock, the neighbors at 92 Drewery Company Drive. They said Melton shot the dog for no reason and Melton ran after the dog and shot it multiple times and that Melton needed to be arrested for shooting the dog,  Henderson told them Melton did nothing wrong by trying to protect his family

The Hancocks then said Melton is a convicted felon and is not allowed to have a gun. Dispatch said that Melton was not a convicted felon. Henderson told all parties involved not to have contact with each other.
