An inmate from Albany has been charged in that violent riot at the Burruss prison in February that hospitalized four inmates.
Kavazeia Dejean Simpson, 19, of Albany, was taken to the Monroe County Jail on Nov. 16 and charged with riot in penal institution, assault, possession of contraband by inmate and gang activity.
Warrants taken by Georgia Department of Corrections investigator David Ethridge accuse Simpson of using a metal pipe as a weapon, causing significant injury to another inmate.
Four Burruss inmates were hospitalized after the Feb. 28 melee.
Spokesman Joan Heath of the Georgia Department of Corrections said the altercation happened around 5:45 p.m. on Feb. 28 over stolen property. A minimum security prison, Burruss has 650 inmates, said Heath.
