Scott and Starr McCook of Culloden celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday, Sept. 5. Arthur Scott McCook and Brenda Starr Upshaw exchanged wedding vows on Sept. 5, 1971 at Grace Baptist Church in Macon with Rev. Charles Flesher officiating. They have lived in the Culloden area since 1989.

They grew up in Macon and met at the Mulberry Methodist Church Youth Center when they were in high school. Starr said Scott was her only real boyfriend. He was playing in the band. She sat on the edge of the stage, and he sang “39-21-40 Shape” to her. “And the rest is history,” said Starr.

Starr is the daughter of Leonard F. And Bertha H. Upshaw, and Scott is the son of Vivian C. Wood and Arthur F. & Clara McCook. Scott retired from Atlanta Belting industrial sales, and Starr retired from Cigna accounting. They are members of Antioch Baptist Church in Yatesville.

The couple have three children, Emily Martin of Forsyth, Cory McCook (Margaret) of The Rock and Kelly Hiers (Jonathan) of Forsyth, and seven grandchildren, Raelee, Charlee, Katelyn, Allen, Sadie, Brenley and Blossom.

Due to Covid, plans for a formal celebration are delayed, but cards with well wishes may be sent to the McCooks at 456 Worsham Road, Culloden 31016.

“Because of faith, hope and the love of God we have treasures that are greater than gold,” said Starr. “We have truly been blessed.”
