Mary Persons senior Zach Mooney, right, received the $4,000 Deputy Michael Norris Scholarship from Reporter publisher Will Davis at Senior Honors Night on May 23. The scholarship is for Monroe County young men and women interested in a career in public safety. The Reporter started the scholarship in memory of Norris, who was killed in the line of duty in 2014. Mooney said it’s an honor to receive the scholarship as Norris was his hero as he was growing up. Below is a photo of Mooney on a four wheeler with his dad (left) riding with Norris several years ago, and also Mooney at Norris’ birthday party. Local support has helped the scholarship increase every year. Tax deductible donations can be sent to P.O. Box 795, Forsyth, GA 30129. Davis said they will likely be able to give an even bigger scholarship next year thanks to the annual golf tournament and other fundraisers. Scholarship applications are available at the Reporter office and from the counselor’s office at Mary Persons High School.
