What’s being called a World War I or II-era land mine training device was found and destroyed at the Forsyth Golf Course on Tuesday. Authorities don’t know how it got there but say it’s been rendered safe by GBI and military officials.

A golf course employee found the device near Country Club Drive just after noon. The nearby National Guard armory said it wasn’t theirs. A witness, who asked to remain anonymous, said authorites used an explosive device to destroy what looked like a gallon tin can with a spring loaded device on the end. The witness said the device was clean so he didn’t think it was buried but had recently been left on the property. When a separate explosive was used to destroy the device, he said it was a little disappointing.

“I was hoping for a bigger boom,” he said.
