To the Editor:
I read with interest the article “Whither our rebel statue?” by Don Daniel in the Aug. 12 Reporter. I was amazed at the quoted comment by Mr. Reed, that the purpose of the monument was “in part, to remind Blacks of their subservient position.” I wonder how he was able to get into the minds and hearts of a group of Monroe County women who lived more than 100 years ago and to “know” their purpose for the statue. It was just his opinion and being so, shame on him!
I have an opinion, too. My opinion is that a group of gentlewomen from Monroe County were overcome with grief and wanted something tangible to memorialize their husbands, fathers, brothers and sons: the men they loved who died in a war. Simple as that.
