The No. 7-ranked Mary Persons girls soccer team improved its record to 11-1-1 after defeating AAAAAA opponent Alexander High School from Douglasville on Thursday March 18. Even though Alexander isn’t a region opponent, this was a big win for the girls as they played a much larger school with a lot of talent.
“They must be in a tough region because they were much better than their record showed,” said Coach Dallas Hall.
With an opening in the schedule due to Americus-Sumter not fielding a girls team, Coach Hall began asking coaches around the state to play to keep the girls in top form. “We needed a good competitive match. We had a really great effort and response from the girls after a disappointing effort against ACE”, said Hall regarding his team’s performance.
The game went back and forth during the first half but with only 7 seconds left in the first half, freshman Reagan Benson scored the game’s first goal. In the second half, Alexander scored its first goal off a controversial call that gave them an indirect free-kick only six yards away from the goal. The first attempt didn’t find the goal but Alexander got another chance after the referee gave an MP player a yellow card for stepping towards the ball before it was kicked. Alexander took advantage of the second chance and scored.
“It was definitely a questionable call,” Hall said of the indirect free kick and yellow card.
Five minutes later the Bulldogs responded with the go-ahead goal after Abby Williamson scored with her head from a free kick for the 2-1 win.
“Overall the team effort and quality was really good. We trusted the way we play, the girls trusted their teammates, they got stuck in and won against a really good team,” said Hall about the team’s performance.
The MP girls have a big Region 2-AAA matchup on Friday against 10th-ranked Jackson. This Top 10 match goes beyond the usual rivalry with the Butts County neighbors. The Jackson girls are undefeated and sit ahead of the MP girls in the region due to having played one more game. If the MP girls want to win the region, they’re going to have to get through the Red Devils first. “I’ve seen them play and they have a few dangerous players. We’re going to have to show up and play well or we’re going to get beat”, said Hall of the Jackson girls. Mary Persons hosts the Devils on Friday with the girls playing at 5:30 and the boys at 7:30.
