The Mary Persons softball team dropped to 2-4 on the young season after a disappointing 17-3 home loss to Pike County on Monday.

Two days earlier, MP bounced back from three straight losses to open the season to sweep a non-region doubleheader in a multi-team tournament at Pike County on Saturday.

The Lady Dogs hammered Griffin 16-0 in Game 1 before outlasting Stratford Academy 8-5 in Game 2. MP scored eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to erase an early 5-0 deficit against the Lady Eagles.

Saturday’s victories came one night after MP dropped to 0-3 with a 9-3 non-region road loss at Lamar County on Friday night. On Thursday, MP fell 5-4 in its home opener to non-region Monticello. The Lady Dogs opened the 2019 season on Tuesday, Aug. 6 with an 11-3 non-region road loss at Crawford County.

MP was next scheduled to host non-region Houston County at 5:55 p.m. on Thursday. The Lady Dogs will then head back on the road for a re-match with Monticello at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20.

Meanwhile, the JV Lady Dogs will next host Houston County at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday while the Monroe County Middle School softball team will open its 2019 campaign with a home contest against Pike County Middle at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20.
