Mary Persons Girls and Boys Track & Field teams competed at the State Championships in the 3A division at Carrollton May 12-14. To qualify for State the athletes, individually or in the team relay events, had to qualify first at Region and then in Sectionals.
The girls, coached by Llonesha McElhaney, finished 10th overall and medaled in six different events. To reach the podium and claim a medal requires a top 8 finish in events that usually go at least 16 competitors deep.
Freshman Anaja Lucear medaled in all of her qualifying events: 7th in the triple jump, 3rd as a member of both the 4 x 200m relay and 2nd as a member of the 4 x 400m relay team.
Senior Campbell Brown medaled in the 200m dash placing 4th and as a member of the 4x200m relay team (3rd) and as a member of the 4 x 400m relay team (2nd).
Sophomore Qua'Nesha Brown reached the podium in 7th placed in the discus throw.
The girls' 4 x 400m relay team (Miah Barkley, Anaja Lucear, Campbell Brown, Damarria Scandrett) finished as State Runner ups at 4:04:52. The 4 x 200m relay team (Miah Barkley, Campbell Brown, Anaja Lucear, Jataria Hardy) placed 3rd in the State Championships with 1:43:07.
The 4 x 800m relay team (Ella Hoover, Abbey Stembridge, Alanna Wood, and Jessica Goodwin) finished 7th overall. Freshman distance runner Ella Hoover finished 13th in both the 800m and 1600m run, and sophomore Abbey Stembridge placed 15th in the 3200m race.
For the Boys Track & Field team, sophomore Ty Dumas earned a 6th place medal in high jump at 6’2”. Freshman Kaethen Bowers finished 11th in the 400m dash and 12th in the triple jump.
Sophomore Seth Davis took 13th place in the 110m hurdles. The Mary Persons 4 x 400m relay team was 10 at State and the 4 x 200m relay team was 15th.
