The MCMS Football team was able to avenge an earlier loss to Upson Lee this year by claiming the MGMSAL championship.
The Bulldogs topped the Knights 16-8 last week. Just 2 weeks ago, Upson scorched the Dogs 26-0. The Bulldogs were able to get on the board first. On their first possession, QB Mac Nelson hit Braylen Jones on a 70-yard pass after Jones had gotten behind the defense. A Nelson to Bennett Buchanan pass on the PAT gave the Dogs an 8-0 lead. The teams traded possessions before the Bulldogs fumbled in their own territory allowing Upson a short field. The Knights were able to capitalize and tie the game at 8-8. The Bulldogs would respond midway through the second quarter on yet another Braylen Jones TD, this time a 70 yard run on a busted play. A Nelson to Bud Morton pass made the score 16-8. That proved to be all the scoring the Dogs needed.
The Monroe defense was all over Upson the rest of the game. Everytime Upson threatened the Bulldogs turned them back. With star running back Braylen Jones sidelined by injury, the Dogs offense simply played keepaway and clock control while the defense did the rest.
Upson had one last chance, but after two consecutive sacks by the defense, defensive back Carter Stembridge intercepted a Knight pass to end any chance Upson had to come back. “The unsung heroes of the game, besides the defense, were the offensive line. 2 weeks ago, Upson lived in our backfield. Today the line was able to establish a new line on the Upson side of the ball. This allowed us to get going out of the backfield and also allowed Nelson time to survey the defense before passing”. Ironically, this year’s scenario was the exact opposite of last year. The Bulldogs defeated Upson in the regular season and Upson defeated the Dogs in the title game.
