Becky Kenirey, a junior, the MP #1 singles player, returns a shot during her tennis match last Tuesday against an opponent from Upson-Lee.

The Mary Persons tennis teams had a successful week last week, with the girls winning all 3 of their matches and the boys winning 1 of 3.

The girls notched region victories over Upson-Lee and Howard, as well as over non-region foe Taylor County. Their record improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the region.

Girls No. 1 player Becky Kenirey went through all three matches without losing a set. She has played in 4 of the team’s 5 matches this year and hasn’t yet lost a single set.

In addition to Kenirey, the other girls singles players also are dominating their opponents. Jackie Gore and Julia Rainey both won all 3 of their matches by convincing margins.

The boys team is having a tougher time this season. Although No. 1 player Micah Wilson was able to win all 3 of his matches and remain undefeated this season, the boys team lost 1-4 to Taylor County and 2-3 to Upson-Lee. The Bulldogs defeated Howard, 5-0.

The boys team now has a record of 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the region.

Head Coach Hannah Grossman said of the girls team, “They have been playing well and getting better, focusing more on strategy.”

She said the boys’ region win against Howard was a good one after a great practice during the week. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, all matches have been canceled at least through March 26. It remains to be seen whether any additional matches will be played this season after March 26.
