Mary Persons cross country teams continued on a strong pace at the Greyhound Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 12. Senior Justin Wachtel gave another accelerated performance winning the Varsity Boys 5K race in 15 minutes, 1 second. Trailing Wachtel by over 2 minutes, Zeke Saviello of Mount de Sales completed the course in 17:03 to take second place.
The Mary Persons Varsity Bulldogs took 3rd place in the meet with 105 points accumulated by MP runners adding up 1, 13, 22, 31 and 38 points. MP was just behind Mount de Sales with 103 points, and Jones County took first place definitively with 30 points.
There were 126 runners and 17 schools participating in the Greyhound Invitational Varsity Boys 5K, which was hosted by Jones County High School in Gray. ACE finish 4th with 118 points, followed by Lamar County with 136 points. Other Mary Persons runners, in order of finish, were Connor Battles (13th at 19:12), Clayton Drury (25th at 19:57), Holden Haworth (34th at 20:19), Cole Battles (38th at 20:43), Jacob Phillips, Jacob Bedgood, Leighton Judd, Brendan Funck and Mitchell Whitfield.
Mary Persons Lady Bulldogs finished 2nd in the Varsity Girls 5K race, led by Senior Ava McKallip in 4th place with a time of 21:55, followed by Freshman Alanna Wood in 6th place with a 22:04 finish.There were 81 runners and 16 schools represented in the event. The Jones County ladies matched their guys’ team with 30 points and a 1st place finish.
The Lady Bulldogs accumulated 41 points to best 3rd place ACE with 73 points and First Presbyterian Dayschool with 141 points. Other Lady Bulldogs competing in the event included Maradeth Leverett (12th at 23:07), Sarah Boyer (14th at 23:10), Madelyn Causey (16th at 23:17), Jessica Goodwin, Genna Hallman, Caroline Hampton, Mary Alice Marks and Laura Martin.
Jones County won the Boys Junior Varsity 5K with a perfect 15 point score, taking the first five spots at the finish line. Marshall Causey with the top Mary Persons runner in 27th place (25:22) followed by William McElmurray (30th), Davis Wilson (32nd), Caleb Hollilfield (33rd), Ike Dunwody (41st) and Colby Hubbard (47th). They finished 4th as a team with 114 points, with Warner Robins in 2nd place and ACE in 3rd place.
Four Lady Bulldogs competed in the JV Girls 5K, lacking a fifth runner to place as a team. The top Mary Persons runner was Stormie Martin in 7th place with 28:07, followed by Skyler Sandefur (11th), Graysen Gaylord (12th) and Star Williams (22nd).
In the Middle School division, the Monroe County Boys were 8th as a team in the two-mile event, with Gavin Harris finishing 5th among 129 runners at 11:47. Other members of the team who completed the race were Gavin Mitchell (14:07), Isaac McKallip (14:08), Christopher Simpson (15:09), Mac Roeser (16:47) and Matthew Biers (17:30).
Gabriella Hoover was the top Monroe County runner in the Middle School Girls two-miler. She took 2nd place in the field of 86 runners with a time of 13:07. Among her teammates, Kolbi McBrayer finished 8th at 14:33, Hannah Goodwin finished 18th at 15:59 and Alecia Gifford finished 71st at 21:27. The Monroe County Middle School girls lacked a fifth runner to place as a team.
Monroe County Cross Country teams are next scheduled to compete on Saturday, Sept. 19 at the Red Devils Town Creek in Hawkinsville and then at Rock Ranch in Upson County on Thursday, Sept. 24.
