Mary Persons rising seniors and triplets Caleb Wilson, Micah Wilson and Preston Wilson (back row) were members of the Raindrop Dropshot tennis team that captured the 18U Intermediate Silver state championship. The Raindrop Dropshot squad, which finished first in group play by two games, prevailed 29-19 in the title match over a team from Richmond Hill in the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Georgia Junior Team Tennis Championships held in Macon from July 19-21. Monroe County native Todd Smith was one of the Raindrop Dropshot team’s two coaches, along with Sandi Rubanov, and other team members included: Mount de Sales students Mary Margaret Smith (the coach’s daughter), Caroline Burns and Carrie Wagner, ACE student Melanie Rubanov and EZ the Elephant, the squad’s mascot. Todd Smith said of the experience: “The biggest takeaway is what a wonderful group of young women and men they are on and off the court. The memories we made were wonderful. It’s unique that the team represented two sets of triplets with my daughter Mary Margaret being a triplet as well as the Wilson triplets. It was a blessing to coach these boys and girls.” There were 75 total teams with over 700 kids participating in the three-day tournament. (Photo/Todd Smith)
